I have previously written that one of the solutions to moving up the corporate ladder is being visible in the organization.

One of my colleagues has this message in his messenger status: Manager’s impression is more important than performance.

I am aware that the message is his sentiment during our appraisal period and I jokingly told him and my other colleagues that we ought to rent a billboard in front of our office showing us in corporate attire.

Visibility inside the organization is very important especially when you are working in a large organization and 20 – 50 managers within your project would be doing evaluation of the staff. To get ahead in the corporate world your own personal brand and visibility status should be as large as a billboard.

I have previously written a post on Work Life Balance and for the past two years I have been a big fan of this concept.

Perspectives change over time, and now I am beginning to feel how overrated Work Life Balance is. How can you beat someone who spends at least 14 hours a day 7 days a week honing his craft?

I remember one of the Jet Li movies wherein he was described as the best in what he does. In the movie, he was described as someone who has no family, friends and his work has his total, undivided dedication and commitment.

I know that is extreme and is no longer healthy in the wholistic development of a person. But, I believe it’s time to think of life work balance as overrated and tilting it a bit into the direction of honing your skills can make a lot of difference in your drive for professional success.
